Merida has designed the Big Nine 20 with emerging riders in mind - their goal was to build a bike that blended reliability, performance and affordability for everyone. You can tell Merida has done an excellent job at investing in areas that have a big impact on the riding feel of the bike such as the hydraulic disc brakes, Shimano mixed gearset, and Suntour XCT30 lockout fork, while they have really gone the extra mile to give you the latest modern features such as internal cable routing which not only looks great but protects your cables from weather and potential "incidents" out on the trails. The Big Nine 20 features a Shimano drivetrain with 2 chainrings at the front and 8 gears at the rear, providing you with plenty of range for steep climbs and descents while still offering the range to smoothly roll along the flats.
