"WE AIM TO CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS SOMETHING BIGGER THAN OURSELVES."
Without a conscious effort to make a positive environmental impact, we would be unable to live by our purpose to enrich mind, body, earth or soul with the freedom of riding. Our wide range of environmental initiatives aims to make the world a better place because we are in it. We are always striving for continuous improvement and constantly looking for ways to achieve better outcomes for the environment. Below are some of the initiatives we have in place as of July 2023.
Our Environmental initiatives
RECYCLING AND WASTE
Our goal is to reduce our general waste by 50% by 2027, with product sourcing including sustainability, reducing the use of plastics, non-recyclable materials and fostering a recycling culture.
Tyre and Tube Recycling
All of our stores in QLD, VIC, SA and WA recycle tyres, while WA also recycles inner tubes. This helps reduce landfill and the rubber is re-used to create products like athletics tracks and playgrounds or is broken back down into its useable components.
Paper and Cardboard
All our stores have paper and cardboard recycling bins, that reduces future energy needs, avoids landfill and helps conserve our limited natural resources like trees.
Soft Plastics
All of our stores in QLD, VIC, SA, and NSW recycle our soft plastics. These plastics are then baled and recycled into useful items like plastic bottles.
Metals
Our workshops recycle metal components in a range of stores in VIC, WA, SA, QLD, NSW and ACT. This allows these products to be reused and given a new life, keeping them from landfill.
Warehouses
All warehouses use paper tape that can be recycled, we have eliminated plastic bubble wrap and use recyclable fill material for online deliveries.
Supplier packaging
Our Pedal Bike packaging has now been changed to 95% recyclable materials.
WATER
In 2024 we are aiming to reduce our water usage by 5%. We are installing water-saving fittings in our stores and changing behaviours through staff education.
GREEN TEAM
The 99 Green Team is a group of everyday people who are sponsored by 99 Bikes to ride to work. The team’s aim is to help relieve traffic congestion, improve the sense of community between riders and motorists, cut carbon emissions and promote a healthy lifestyle.
UPCYCLE
We upcycle to offer new life to bikes that would otherwise end up in landfill. This also allows us to partner with charities that give back to our communities and provides opportunities for people to ride and learn more about bikes who may otherwise not be able to access them.
South Australia
Partnering with Lighthouse Youth Projects Inc, a community workshop that strives to empower all youth, especially those who are vulnerable and are at-risk, to achieve their full potential through bike based programs and workshops. More about Lighthouse Youth Project Inc
Western Australia
Partnering with Dismantle, which is a charity that empowers and enables vulnerable young people to live their life in a self-directed way. Bring in your 2nd hand bike to any of our Perth stores and we will donate the bike to Dismantle. More about Dismantle
Australian Capital Territory
Partnering with The Recyclery, a community workshop where preloved bicycles are refurbished and give a second chance at life, avoiding landfill and helping the community. More about The Recyclery
Victoria
Partnering with Brainwave Australia, a new Melbourne based social enterprise to donate, recycle and reuse bikes while providing employment and traineeships for people with a disability and raising money for Brainwave Australia. More about Brainwave Australia
CARBON
It is our goal to become a carbon-neutral company in the future. In 2022 we undertook a Carbon Assessment through an external auditor, EnergyLink, to determine our baseline CO2 emissions. From here we are working on our key areas of emissions to reduce our emissions such as our electricity, water, and freight.
